Dangers of Antihistamines and Sleep Aids Print E-mail


Antihistamines, used to treat allergies, can cause some side effects, like drowsiness, dizziness, nervousness, mild euphoria, and tremors, even when used medicinally at suggested doses. Abusers who take many times the recommended amount experience more intense side effects. Along with the enhanced euphoria they are looking for, the other side effects are also increased. Additionally, muscle spasms, irregular heartbeat, faintness, and convulsions can also occur with extremely high levels of antihistamines.

Not surprisingly, people who abuse sleep aids to get high end up having problems with their sleep cycles. Sleep aids, as they promise, cause drowsiness. When abused during the day, obvious problems arise. Normal
patterns of sleep during the night and wakefulness during the day are necessary for normal functioning of the human body. Interfering with sleep patterns can lead to other problems, such as mood changes and falling asleep while operating machinery or performing other daily chores that suddenly become dangerous. According to some studies, extended use of this type of OTC drug, and experiencing the accompanying tiredness, can even lead to narcolepsy.
