Dangers of DXM, Part 1 Print E-mail

Like all other drugs that are abused, users get more than they bargained for when taking OTC drugs. Besides inducing hallucinations, relieving stress, or helping with weight loss, OTC drugs have a host of both short- and long-term side effects that are anything but fun or beneficial.

Abusing DXM leads to many physical side effects that are at the least uncomfortable, and at the most extreme, possibly deadly. Some of the milder effects that an abuser may experience include dizziness, nausea, a loss of coordination, sweating, blurred vision and dilated pupils, slurred speech, headaches, skin sensitivity, redness in the face, dry skin and mouth, and numbness in the extremities. The body's muscles are also adversely affected, and tremors or involuntary twitching can appear in those high on DXM. Another frequent side effect is called robo itch. Abusers sometimes feel an intense itching sensation that is caused by the release of histamines in the body. Many of these signs are visible, and can be used to identify someone who is high on DXM.

Not all of DXM's side effects are physical. Since it is a substance that works on the brain, users experience several adverse psychological side effects too. Ironically (since people generally abuse DXM in an effort to get "high"), dysphoriaextreme sadnesscan occur, along with paranoia, confusion, disorientation, distorted time perception, and mania. It is these feelings that lead to some people's "bad trips," frightening and painful experiences that can occur while high on DXM.
